The first home match of the season saw TWHC dispatch Marden in style under the sunshine at Kent College.
TWHC started strongly, dominating possession and pressing high from the first whistle. Grace made some darting runs in the pocket behind the front pairing of Maddie and Sophia, whose intelligent lateral movement stretched the defence and created space. On the right flank, Tilly and Victoria combined beautifully to create overlaps, while on the opposite side Bea and Fran surged into the D, forcing a string of impressive saves from the Marden keeper.
It felt like just a matter of time before the breakthrough came — and finally Grace opened the scoring, coolly slotting home after another incisive move. Maddie soon doubled the lead with a clinical finish late in the quarter. Once we realised the key to unlocking their defence was to draw out the keeper and pull the ball back to the P-spot, the floodgates opened.
The final scoreline read 8–0, with Grace bagging a hat trick, Maddie and Fran both scoring twice, and Sophia adding one of her own.
As legs tired towards the end, we understandably lost our shape a little — which at least gave Elodie the chance to make a strong save and a sharp clearance (spare a thought for Isobel, who had rather less to do!). We talked about maintaining structure and controlling possession, and the team did exactly that with Annabel shielding the defence and acting as an outlet. A clean sheet was the perfect complement to an emphatic attacking performance — well done to the entire defence!
Favourite Goal: a silky-smooth penalty corner routine — more of those, please!
Hero of the Day: Ruby, for literally putting her body (well, eyebrow!) on the line to deny a certain goal. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Debuts for Mollie, who showed great versatility covering both flanks; Eleri, who grew into the game and impressed as it went on; and Elodie, who looked calm and confident in goal.
Thank you to Annabel, Olivia, Fran, Ruby, and Victoria for ably sharing sweeping duties throughout the game.
Next up: Sevenoaks Lightning, who also remain undefeated — a big game ahead this weekend!
