The best season

The final league game of the season presented us with an unusual challenge. One of our most loyal and favourite supporters; Ali (wife to Scott and mum of Mack & Gus) suffered a very unfortunate ball strike to the face in a freak sideline accident and required immediate hospital attention. Scott quite rightly took her and I am pleased to say that she is now back at home and recovering, albeit sorely (lots of love from the Monarchs family Ali). At the time it was 1-0 after an early goal from Finn who had calmly flicked over a prostate goalkeeper after a circle melee.

We came together and hashed a strategy: 11 outfield players, a relaxing of our high press to make them play out the back and then packing the midfield area to combat this. Our opposition looked to play two forwards high which made sense and then looked to strike long balls to them, which did not ! Our communication was key and we made our extra man tell by punishing Gravesham when they turned over the ball by retaining it for long periods of time. Gaps opened and soon we were entering their 25 and D at regular intervals. This led to 3 goals, an absolute worldie from Tommy (who smashed a reverse hit from the left side of the D into the top right hand corner), a penalty flick won and converted by Finn (through Mack's generosity) and a short corner rebound again scored by Tommy.

The opposition were understandably frustrated but could do little about it. They eventually managed to string together a good passing move which led to an open goal tap in and did earn 2 short corners but couldn't convert either. Sam Hartman and debutee Tim Coulston had excellent games supporting me and Nick in defence but in truth all players were outstanding with the midfielders earning a key mention - Ethan.M, Angus, Finn & Tommy.

A fitting end to a superb season, league winners by 7 points and as their Coach, I couldn't be any prouder of this team. Bring on the 2020-21 season !
