As you are hopefully already aware, it has recently been announced that one of our Flyerz, Ellen, will be representing GB at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin next month. We are also hoping (although formal team announcement has not been made yet) that another of our Flyerz will be part of the England Squad at the Euro ParahockeyID Championships in Monchengladbach in August.
These are fantastic achievements and, as importantly, it is wonderful to see how they (and all our other Flyerz) have all progressed and developed both on and off the hockey pitch since we started running our sessions five and a half years ago. It's often easy for the coaches at our sessions who walk away after an hour and a half of unmitigated laughs and fun (usually at my and Binky's expense) to forget just what a significant impact Flyerz hockey has for the participants and their families and how important being part of a club like TWHC is.
Whilst the tournament costs are covered, there is nonetheless a significant contribution that the players' families are asked to make both for the event itself and also for required eligibility pre-assessment tests - and I'm looking to help cover some of these costs and generally support the activities of our flourishing Flyerz (disability hockey) section by taking on a couple of challenges that seem dafter by the day (as the time to do them gets ever nearer).
So, next week I'm off to Pitlochry for a few days to ride the 40 mile edition of the Etape Caledonia - suffice to say there is a lot of steep uphill to get my body (which is neither as lithe nor light as it was 30 years ago) up .... While there, Darcey (the Large Munsterlander) and I also plan to bag another Munro (a mountain over 3,000 feet) - snow/weather permitting - which will hopefully be Schiehallion.
If you could support the Club and our Flyerz by donating just a little something to our JustGiving page (which goes directly and wholly to the Club) - it would be hugely appreciated and you will know it is going to a fantastically worthy cause and an opportunity of a lifetime for our young Flyerz (both those going on international duty this Summer and all of our regular members).
The page link - with full details - is here.
Thanking you in advance,
Francis and Darcey
