You tend to find out about players in a fixture like this - an away game at Herne Bay with so much rain that a swimming pool effect was created on the changing room floor as kit was wrung out !! Nearly all of us arrived late due to traffic on the motorway but a curtailed warm-up was no bad thing.
What was more pleasing was that we settled into our pass and move hockey straightaway - transitioning the ball across the pitch quickly aided by a slick surface. Tim Sylvester opened the scoring with a great stop in the D that caused him to fall over but still swing and make a great reverse connection to rattle the backboard. Seb Wright then scored by breaking behind the defence to allow an aerial over the top - he let the ball bounce and then with great skill lobbed the advancing goalkeeper. 2-0 at the break was a position we had established last week and then let slide.
However our third goal soon arrived with Tim.S grabbing his second through converting a drag flick after the PC had been won. Sam Judge then scored a deserving goal, calmly converting a pass at the back post after a fine piece of team build-up play.
Matt Day was commanding in goal saving 4 corners and generally just displaying great technique and making the goal look a very small place. Our heart of the side - the juniors - were in fine form - Henry, Angus & Zach sticking to their defensive duties and being solid on the ball as they broke out of defence. Toby, composed in midfield and Seb & Sam simply terrorising Herne Bay's back line with their intelligent running, early passes and individual 1:1 skills.
A special mention to Ben Edwards & Chris Pelham who joined us from the 3's and were both excellent. Freddie Hoare really dug in after being physically impacted by his 2nd Covid jab and our skipper (and the Umpires best new friend !) Hugh led well at sweeper.
Bring on Maidstone as we continue to build the culture and effectiveness of this development side !
