It was a cold November morning, when I , a confident mid-fielder, was sent to sweep. No worries, easy I thought. I can show those defenders how it's done. Coach Lisa said, "Stick down, stay strong, don't let them through", sounds simple enough I thought. However, with a constant sea of blue in front of me, panic ensued. After 10 minutes of every foot in the D meeting the ball and clashes of illegal stick tackles, I lost count of how many penalty corners we gave away, I cleared the area with a smashing hit. I found myself soon shouting at the mid-fielders like a veteran defender and was left wondering if they knew they too were suppose to come back and defend. Then coach Lisa subbed me just in time, to remind me of the rules of hockey. It was still 0-0 at half time though, we were just surviving. We settled into the 2nd half and then the opposition scored. We kept our heads high and came back with goal quickly. This encouraged us, before the reality of unfitness and fatigue set in. Oh dear, we will try harder next week to get some more points on the board.
