Solid performance secures 3 points

The men's 3rd XI continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-0 win away to Gillingham. The game started with a minutes silence for Remembrance day and then the loudest sticks-in 'Wells' cheer of the season especially for Nick Hale.

With the 12 players including a limping Ginger and a captain lacking depth perception with a lingering black eye, the last thing we needed was an injury. Unfortunately Henry ran head first into a ball that looped up off a stick in the D after a cross was blocked and we were down to 11 and a very warrior like Henry sat on the side (I'm assured a bit of glue has made everything better!).

Aside from the injury, the hockey was looking more impressive from TWells. A (sliced?) screamer from Will Graystone fired off the inside of the post gave us the lead, but Horatio had to be on his toes on a few occasions to come off his line and clear the danger and ensure we were 1-0 up at half time.

The second half was more one-sided, but the forwards all insisted on trying to score at the near-post and the Gillingham GK made a number of good saves, before late in the game Martin Powell managed to get his 4th goal of the season bundling one over the line.

The game was played in great spirits, with lots of honesty from both teams, excellent first aid skills from the opposition umpire and a great attitude from all the team - especially the 5 juniors in the ranks, with Felix picking up man of the match for a faultless performance.

On to Hawkenbury next week to take on Holcombe - and see if Mat Thewlis can remember how to score...you'll no doubt hear the celebration if he does!
